With the 2008 U.S. Presidential  Election being held this year, we thought it was a good fit. Elections are a great time to reflect on independence and creativity. Independent artists and do-it-yourselfers are vital to the creative makeup of any country. Artists are risk-takers, pushing at the boundaries that have been established – making new ideas when stale ones are worn out. Like any modern country, the United States has important issues that need to be addressed with as much creativity as possible.

DIY City Mag is particularly proud to present artists and crafters who use upcycled materials in their work. We feel that environmental issues are of great importance and we are excited that many artists are working to address these issues. Take a look at our Eco-Remix section to see some great designs. And with our U.S. economy struggling, you will be pleased to find many do-it-yourself ideas and resources to help get you through the months ahead.

DIY City Mag is a collaborative publication made possible by the efforts of many. Our online magazine gives many opportunities for self-expression. You will have a chance to see the streets of DC – a “justwhatisee” view from Greg Schmigel’ s IPhone.

You will see many artists expressing their views related to the candidates in this election. While we certainly have our preferences, we tried to give a balanced and fun view of the choices. We had a great time interviewing artists such as Imani K. Brown. Imani makes custom hand-painted shoes, she even has made a pair for Obama supporters.

Up next in February 2009, we will have a special issue of DIY City Mag. We will show you the best DIY workshops, classes, and mini vacations across the U.S. Craft Tourism is a growing market, even in a shrinking economy. DIY Travel will let you combine a vacation with learning fun new skills. One of the mini travel trips you can take is to Spuce in Austin, Texas. At Spruce you can experience the new “Make Your Statement” upholstery workshops. The ladies of Spruce will show you how to make your very own statement piece - what a way to maintain a stylish home in tight times. And in July 2009, we will take DIY City Mag on the road to London. Sara Millis, our guest editor, and a host of contributors, will show you how to do-it-yourself - London style.

As you express your creativity and independence this election season, do it DIY style.
